Caren Schumacher, Executive Director

Caren Schumacher has been executive director of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy since October 2001. Caren’s work with landowners has increased the Conservancy’s permanently protected properties from 600 acres to over 6,300 acres. Prior to moving to Williamsburg 14½ years ago, Caren was a senior executive for a national trade association in Alexandria VA. Her community volunteer efforts in Northern Virginia earned her both the Reston Citizen of the Year recognition and a Fairfax County Citizen of the Year Citation of Merit.

Caren served on the Williamsburg Farmers’ Market Board of Directors and was part of the team that helped bring the market to Williamsburg. She is a 2003 graduate of the Chamber’s LEAD Historic Triangle (LHT) program and currently serves on their Board of Directors and their Executive Committee. She has also served on the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation Board of Directors, and currently serves on the Executive Committee of VaULT – Virginia United Land Trusts, which was organized in 2000 to address the growing interest and number of organizations involved in land conservation.

Caren is a Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg and serves on the Kiwanis Foundation Board of Directors. She also serves as the Kiwanis Capital District Public Relations Chair, and has been elected to serve as Lieutenant Governor commencing in October 2016. In 2011, Caren received the Conservancy’s Chair’s Award of Excellence, and in 2013 received the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs Arbor Day Individual Award.

Caren and her husband Ed have three grown children and are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren.
