BOARD OF DIRECTORS
BILL WILLIAMS, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Bill is retired from the Williamsburg-James City County Schools where he served for 31 years as a teacher and K-12 Science and Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator. He was the founder of the Region 2 Science and Mathematics Coalition, served on the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Living Museum, and the Board of Directors of the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition.
He is an Adjunct Faculty member of the School of Education at the College of William and Mary and has conducted science education workshops at the national, state, and local levels. He was a founder of the Williamsburg Bird Club, and the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory. Author of numerous publications in the field of ornithology, Bill is a past president of the Virginia Society of Ornithology and is the Coastal Region editor for the journal, Virginia Birds. He was Director of the Virginia Barrier Islands Colonial Waterbirds Survey for the Virginia Coast Reserve of The Nature Conservancy from 1975-2005. Bill has been awarded the President’s Stewardship Award by The Nature Conservancy, the Harry Armistead Service Award by the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory, and the James Eike Service Award by the Virginia Society of Ornithology. He was the founder and Director of the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch from 1977-2002. He was a founding member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy (formerly the Historic Rivers Land Conservancy), and has served three terms as its president.
He was a 1969 graduate of Emory and Henry College in Biology and holds a Masters Degree in Biology from the College of William and Mary. Bill and his wife, Arlene, own Morrison’s Flowers and Gifts in Williamsburg.
RICH KRAPF, VICE CHAIRMAN Rich Krapf has worked for Colonial Williamsburg since 1993, currently serving as Director of Operations at the Visitor Center. Prior to that, he spent 20 years in the U. S. Air Force. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and holds a Master of Public Administration degree.
Rich joined the Williamsburg Land Conservancy board in 2006. In 2007, he was appointed to the James City County Planning Commission, representing the Stonehouse District. He is also on the board of directors for Friends of Forge Road & Toano and served on the County’s Rural Lands Committee. In 1998, he was selected to be a Loaned Executive to the United Way of Greater Williamsburg.
Rich and his wife Peggy, owner of Heart’s Ease Landscape Design, have two children. Michael is a technical news director for a television station in Charlottesville and Emily is the Registrar for Colonial Williamsburg’s Summer Teacher Institute. She also owns Memory Card Photography
DON BAKER, SECRETARY/TREASURER Don grew up in Torrington, Connecticut and graduated from Dartmouth College and Thayer School of Engineering. Don's early working life was as an environmental engineer with the United States Public Health Service. He left that calling and held a variety of operations, engineering and executive in the telecommunications industry.
He and his wife, Linda, have climbed the forty-six 4000 footers in New Hampshire, golfed in all 50 states and visited the seven continents of the world. They have lived in Williamsburg since 1992 and are active volunteers in our community. Don serves as Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of Williamsburg Symphonia and is the of the Ford's Colony Homeowners Association Finance Committee. He is a past president of the Men's Golf Association and formerly headed the Security Committee at Ford's Colony.
Linda and Don have two sons and two grandchildren, all located in the western United States.
TIM CLEARY, IMMEDIATE PAST CHAIRMAN Tim Cleary is Managing Director of Charles Ross Homes, a Williamsburg-based residential design/build company. He has been a member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy since 2001.
Tim has a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT and is a licensed professional engineer.
Tim and his wife Candy live in James City County. They have a son Andrew (age 18), and a daughter Taryn (age 6). Tim is is an avid shot gunner, fisherman and supporter of Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation. The Clearys own a tree farm in upstate New York that is actively managed to benefit wildlife.
ROBERT KEITH, EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Bob is entering his fourth year as a member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy Board of Directors. He has been an active volunteer for the Conservancy for over nine years, concentrating, in his early involvement, on relations between the Conservancy and the various Historic Triangle government activities and agencies. In 2009, Bob served as General Chair of the Conservancy’s fundraising activities, as an at-large member of the Executive Committee of the Board and as Chair of the Board Recruitment/Development Panel.
He is a retired business executive, having served as a Chief Operating Officer, Director of Long Range Planning and Manager of New Ventures for several major corporations. He, and his wife Sharon, have lived in Williamsburg for the past seventeen years and have been active in the community during this time. Their three children and grandchildren live throughout the country. Bob, in addition to his interest in land conservation, has been an active volunteer in support of the United Way and Olde Town Medical Center, among others. He recently served on the ten member JCC Community Participation Team responsible for collecting citizen input into the Comprehensive Plan development. He has served in various leadership capacities in his New Town community and was recently appointed as a Member of the Board of Directors of the New Town Residential Association, Inc.
CAREN SCHUMACHER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Caren has been Executive Director of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy since October 2001. Prior to moving to Williamsburg, Caren spent a decade as vice president of a national trade association located in Alexandria, VA. Her many years of active community involvement earned Caren the distinction of Reston Citizen of the Year and received the Washington Post’s Fairfax County Citizen of the Year Citation of Merit for her work in implementing the concept of parent-given, drug and alcohol-free All Night Graduation parties in Fairfax County.
Caren serves as president of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, was a 2003 graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership Historic Triangle program and now serves on their Board. Caren has also served on the boards of the Williamsburg Farmers’ Market and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation.
She and her husband, Ed, have three grown and married children, two of whom reside in Williamsburg, and one who lives in Covington, Louisiana. They are the proud grandparents of four grandsons and two granddaughters.
GARY KRULL With the closing of Krull Communications, LLC in 2008, Gary Krull ended a career of over 30 years in the not-for-profit world. Following his time in the US Army, Gary worked in media/educational communications for 6 years and then began his development/marketing /communications career. He worked first as a development officer at Iowa State University for 10 years, then with Designers Folio (a small advertising agency) in Washington, DC, next with the US Chamber of Commerce in their Broadcast division, and finishing off with 9 years as VP for Communications at Georgetown University.
There was one last stop before the Williamsburg years when Gary served as Director of Communications Policy at the National Endowment for the Humanities (a White House appointment) for 6 years.
At Krull Communications, Gary and his wife Margaret, along with numerous contract employees, worked with not-for-profits across the United States focusing on museums, galleries, small universities and charities.
ALAIN OUTLAW Alain Outlaw was a member of the Historic Rivers Land Conservancy in 1990 and has been a member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy Board of Directors since 2005. He is also a member of: the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation Board of Directors; the James City County Historical Commission; Troop 103, Boy Scouts of America; and the Vestry of Bruton Parish Church. In addition, he is an adjunct professor in the History Department at Christopher Newport University.
Alain brings to the Conservancy a wide range of experience in state government (as former Commissioner of Archaeology/State Archaeology), education and academic settings, and private business. He is Principal Archaeologist with Archaeological & Cultural Solutions, Inc.
Alain and his wife Merry have a daughter, Abby, who is in her first year at Virginia Commonwealth University and is studying Vocal Performance in the Music Department
MATT RIDJANECK Matt Ridjaneck grew up in Western Pennsylvania and moved to Virginia to attend the College of William & Mary, where he played football on an athletic scholarship. While earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Matt began his career in financial services as a summer intern at Guardian Life. He joined the team as a full time agent in January of 2006. In 2007, he joined Stephens Financial Partners in Virginia Beach, and now manages the company’s Williamsburg and Virginia Beach office.
Matt is very involved in the community and is the Treasurer on the Board of Directors of Virginia Premier Theatre. Matt is also a member of the board of directors for Williamsburg-NAIFA organization. Matt is also a very active member in the Young Emerging Professionals of Williamsburg. Matt is member of the William & Mary alumni Association and the William & Mary Tribe Club which raises money for athletic scholarships. He is also a member of the HEYFARL organization which raises money for walk on athletes at William & Mary. He is also President of the Captains of Commerce in the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce. In his spare time, Matt enjoys broadcasting high school football on the radio, watching sports, and playing golf.
MARK RINALDI Mark Rinaldi is a native of Yorktown, Virginia. Mark earned a BA in Land Use from the College of William and Mary and later his Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree at Virginia Tech. Mark is currently Vice-President of Development for the Bush Companies, a Williamsburg-based, family-owned group of companies offering full service real estate development, construction, sales/leasing and management across the Mid-Atlantic.
A graduate of the Virginia Peninsula Leadership Institute in 1995, Mark served two years on the Peninsula United Way Fund Distribution Panel, volunteered for two James City County Comprehensive Plan Updates as a community conversations facilitator, served two years on the Board of Directors for the Williamsburg Symphonia, was appointed by the General Assembly to serve on the Department of Environmental Quality Peer Review team, and was appointed times as a Director with the James City County Economic Development Authority, the last two years serving as its Chairman. Mark joined the Board of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy in December 2004 in the hopes of bridging the communication divide between equally important conservation and development interests in our community.
Mark and his wife, Claudia, together raise their two children, Max (9) and Jake (6), in Sycamore Landing.
BRUCE ROBERTSON Bruce Robertson was born in Williamsburg and has spent his entire life in this community. He and his wife, Clara, have three grown children and eight wonderful grandchildren.
Bruce is a member of the Williamsburg Rotary Club and a past Director of the Williamsburg Jaycees. He has also served as Chairman and President of the United Way. Bruce has twice served as President of the Merchant Square Association, as well as Treasurer and Director of the Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a past Elder and Deacon of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Chesapeake Bank and The Williamsburg Landing
TIM WEIDMAN Following a career around the world in international and corporate banking, Tim retired from New York to Ford's Colony with his wife, Ellen, in 2003. They are members of Ford's Colony Country Club and Tim is past president of Ford's Colony Newcomers' Club, past Chair of F.C. Activities Committee, past F.C.Travel Club board member/trip leader, and served four years on the Olde Towne Medical Center Challenge at Ford's Colony. He has served on the boards of the Williamsburg Area Performing Arts Center, the George Washington Birthplace Association, king of Glory Lutheran Church, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Tim has assisted at several local events such as the Michelob Ultra LPGA Golf Tournaments, Kiwanis Club fundraisers, Occasion for the Arts, Williamsburg Christmas Parades, Salvation Army, and continues to volunteer at Colonial Williamsburg. He is currently on the boards of the Virginia Symphony Society (past president), Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, and the Williamsburg Land Conservancy
ELIZABETH FRIEL Elizabeth Friel has been working as a professional planner in Virginia for more than twenty years. Ms. Friel began her career in Williamsburg as a Planner and has recently returned to the Williamsburg area where she is working in the private sector. In the intervening years Ms. Friel worked in progressively responsible positions in rapidly developing communities. She served most recently as the Planning Director for the City of Falls Church for nine years. In the Planning Director position, Ms. Friel managed all aspects of planning, zoning, geographic information systems, historic preservation and arboriculture. Ms. Friel led the City in an overhaul of all development processes and facilitated more that 2 million square feet of neo-traditional mixed-use redevelopment. Throughout her career Ms. Friel has been a Board member of the American Planning Association-Virginia Chapter. She is a past President of the organization and currently serving as Vice President for Chapter Affairs. Ms. Friel is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. Ms Friel is also an active volunteer with the Williamsburg Land Conservancy, the Heritage Humane Society and Walsingham Academy.
JACK HALDEMAN Jack is a new member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy board, although he has supported the Conservancy since moving with his wife, Patricia, to the area five years ago. They have owned property here since 1988.A native of Pittsburgh, Jack moved to New Jersey in 1978 to continue a career in investment management. is presently a partner in Samson Capital Advisors, a firm that specializes in managing fixed income portfolios for wealthy families and related nonprofit entities.
Jack is a former Boy Scout leader and a two-term school board member. Since moving to James City County, Jack has served on three committees of his HOA, on the County Stormwater Program Advisory Committee, on the board of the James City County Citizens’ Coalition, and as an alternate on the County Comprehensive Plan Community Participation Team. also chairs the endowment committee of the Hospice House of Williamsburg. is a certified County Stream Monitor Volunteer and an active member of Kiwanis, an international service club whose primary focus is upon the youth of Greater Williamsburg.
JOE HARROW Joe Harrow is the President of the Middle Peninsula Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. He has lived in Williamsburg since 1987, where he began his career at SunTrust Bank as a commercial lending officer in the Private Banking Department.
Joe is the past chairman of Hospice Support Care of Williamsburg. He sits on the board of Virginia Company Bank. He is the past chairman of the following insurance company agent council advisory boards: Selective Insurance Company; Northern Neck Insurance Company; and Donegal Insurance Company. He also serves on the James City County Educational Foundation, is involved with the Grove Christian Outreach Center, and actively coaches youth sports in the Williamsburg.
Joe is a 1986 graduate of Randolph-Macon College and a 1994 Graduate of the Leadership Historic Triangle’s first class. Joe has two teenage children in the James City County Public School System.
RANDY CHAMBERS Randy has been on the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy since fall of 2004.He is a professor of biology and is director of the W.M. Keck Environmental Field Laboratory at the College of William and Mary. His professional research interests are focused on wetlands, where he studies invasive species, the downstream impacts of stormwater runoff, and the habits of aquatic turtles. Randy runs the College Creek Alliance-a/citizen program for monitoring water quality in the College Creek watershed. Randy and his wife, Beth, reside in Williamsburg.
GREG DAVIS Greg has been practicing law in Williamsburg for more than 20 years; he is currently the Managing Partner of the Williamsburg office of Kaufman & Canoles PC, and serves on the firm's Executive Committee. His practice focuses on estate, land use and estate planning. graduate of the University of Virginia and William and Mary Law School, taught as an adjunct professor at the Law School during the first 10 years of his practice.
He has been active in the community, serving in the past as President of the Williamsburg Bar Association, and currently serving on the SunTrust Bank Advisory Board and the Walsingham Academy Board of Trustees, which he chaired for the last 5 years. He has been recognized repeatedly by the Virginia Bar Association as a Virginia Community Servant.
Greg's wife of 25 years is Beth Davis, a Director at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, and a native of Williamsburg. Their daughter Sarah is a student at the University of South Carolina.
LEANNE DUBOIS Leanne DuBois brings with her years of diverse experience in the Horticulture and Agricultural field. She has served as an Agriculture Extension Agent with both Cornell Cooperative Extension in upstate New York and Virginia Cooperative Extension in James City County and New Kent County. Presently she serves as the Manager of Direct Marketing Services for Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. There her duties include developing and implementing programs to facilitate the growth of specialty agriculture and direct marketing opportunities for Virginia Agricultural producers. Areas of focus include entrepreneurial development, agritourism, farmers’ markets, organic production and consumer outreach programs such as the Virginia Grown promotional campaign. She is also the state coordinator for the Virginia Farm to School program. Leanne also serves on the Williamsburg Farmers’ Market Board and the James City County Economic Development Authority and is Chairman of the Rural Economic Development Committee.
TUCKER EDMONDS Tucker Edmonds is employed by Chesapeake Bank, following a former career in banking and then aviation. He has been involved with the Williamsburg Land Conservancy for the last several years on different projects for the fundraising committee and strongly believes the organization’s mission.
Tucker’s volunteer affiliations include serving on the boards of the Williamsburg Area Chamber and Tourism Alliance; Leadership Historic Triangle (Class of 2001); Jamestown 2007 Host Committee Community Activities Task Force; Greater Williamsburg United Way Campaign – Finance Division Chair; and the Board of Directors of Colonial CASA.
